Fence jumping cattle!
Who would have thought
Time to move the critters to the next part of the paddock!
I dressed for the weather: jacket, hat, gloves, and Red Band gumboots!
It’s cold here in the South Waikato on the first day of August.
Off I went to shift the electric fence and give our four beasties an area of new grass to munch on, but what’s this? There are only three beasties! Where is the fourth one?
He’s only gone and jumped the fence to hang out with the neighbour’s bulls!!
What do I do? First…panic! But that’s not going to get my critter back, so cancel that thought!
Hubby won’t be home for a few hours, and by then it will be too dark to do anything. Calling the neighbour was useful in that it confirmed that this was indeed our critter in his paddock (his bulls are all black and white, my steer is brown and white), but no offer of help to get him back.
I phoned the lovely man (who is 82 years old) down the road and explained my dilemma to him. He offered to come and help me find a solution, I gratefully accepted his offer.
The solution, as it turned out, was that we opened the gate between the two farms and he went into the paddock with said bulls, armed with only a long, strong stick, as I (also armed with a long, strong stick) stood guard at the gate to keep the bulls out, and he herded my critter back through the gate to where he belonged!
